Stradivarius calls the tune in sixth WH Stayers' Million qualifier
Stradivarius, who carried all before him to land the inaugural WH Stayers' Million, kicked-off his 2019 campaign to retain the crown with a repeat victory in the sixth qualifying race, the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup.
In the hands Frankie Dettori, the son of Sea The Stars was settled in fourth for much of the race, but when push came to shove in the home straight he battled on well to get up by a comfortable three-quarters of a length from Southern France and Ryan Moore.
Speaking after the race John Gosden, his trainer, commented: "It was a lovely performance. He looked a little ring-rusty early in the straight but he can do that now as he is aware he is still a full stallion, which he was letting us know sadly.
"Frankie had to slightly concentrate his mind but he finished out very well and this is the minimum distance for him I think.
"It was a very steady pace and a bit of a dash. It was a bit sharp for him but I'm thrilled he got there. He has not been trained hard for this.
"We can now look forward to the Gold Cup."
Attention now turns to the final two qualifying races at Sandown Park, on Thursday 23rd May for the Matchbook Henry II Stakes, and ParisLongchamp, on Sunday 26th May for the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier.
